Guru Nanak offers to the simple folk the cup of nectar to taste. He puts a live song in the throats of those who sing it to the wild lilts of prairie and jungle, gathered in great congregations.
Asa ki Var describes the process by which a man learns to cut through the duality of thought and action to become one with the Divine and transform from an ordinary individual into an angel.
The Asa ki Var workshop provides a deep and rich insight into the wisdom of the Guru by highlighting three different aspect of human life; the individual thought process, the resultant actions and the society in which these actions bear fruit. By choosing different saloks and pauris from the bani each aspect of this human duality is elaborated on.
Through these saloks , the workshop explores the way Guru brings about a transformation in an individual to a more conscious and aware person, who is away from empty ritualism and acts on love and devotion of the Divine. In the first part, workshop explains how the preacher class and the masses under its influence are caught up in empty emotionless thoughts and false intellectual notions about the self, visible reality and beyond. The second part of the workshop exposes the hypocrisy in the acts of the individuals who indulges in insincere and hypocritical activities that have no meaning in the relationship that a person intends to develop with the Divine.
In the third part, the workshop describes different divisions created in the society with respect to the ideas of good and bad, high and low status, sacred and profane etc. With the help of chosen saloks and pauris , the workshop highlights these dichotomies in human life.

Some people argue that the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev ji wrote the first 9 together on one occasion and later wrote 15 more stanzas on a different occasion but Professor Sahib Singh and some of the foremost Sikh scholars believe that the whole Var was written at the same place as the Var itself proceeds in a definite uniformity. These Sloks are tied together in a way that they relate to the same theme as highlighted in the pauri. The Asa Di Var kirtan is recited in the early morning hours in a very melodious way and style as mentioned by Guru Arjan Dev Ji called "Tunde Asraje Ki Dhuni" after the name of the contemporary brave and pious king Asraj. One of the hands of the king was amputated, so he was called Tunda meaning one hand amputated. The deeds and the ode of this king was sung by the bards in that typical fashion which then was extremely popular and melodious and was therefore adopted to performing Asa Di Var.
