View all 4 comments. Ahhhhh love clarice. Jan 17, Shawn Birss rated it really liked it Shelves: fiction , translated. This beautiful little collection of short stories expertly captures the feelings and thoughts of childhood in relation to others and the world, and the loss of childhood in coming of age.
The stories are very short, some hardly more than a page, creating snapshots in vignettes that feel so real they might by autobiography. Lispector's ability to capture the inner world is so unique and powerful that even across time, culture, and language, most of these stories could have been my own.
For those This beautiful little collection of short stories expertly captures the feelings and thoughts of childhood in relation to others and the world, and the loss of childhood in coming of age.
For those that were far removed from my experience, Lispector's descriptions still so captured me that I felt I had lived them. My only disappointment with this collection at all is the minority of stories, perhaps two, whose themes seemed out of place by the older age of their narrators, and that it was too short.

I read an English translation of this book that was heavily abridged, though I'm trying to find a Portuguese copy. Though I don't have many things in common with the heroine, the author made her so relatable that I was often moved by what she was experiencing.
This book deals with the struggles of emigrating to a new country, illiteracy, poverty, and bullying. It's a short story, so easy to fit into an afternoon and a great topic for a bookclub.
I'm not sure if this book is a work of fiction or part autobiography, though it appears to be the later. Lispector was a Jewish Ukrainian whose family left their home for Brazil to escape the pogroms.
