Ludwig van Beethoven 's Piano Sonata No. It has remained one of his most celebrated compositions. The second movement, "Adagio cantabile", especially, makes use of a theme remarkably similar to one in the spacious second movement of Mozart's sonata. It is known that Beethoven was familiar with the works of Bach, studying The Well-Tempered Clavier as a youth and returning to his predecessor's compositional styles later in life. In its entirety, encompassing all three movements , the work takes approximately 19 minutes to perform. The first movement is in sonata form.

The first movement begins with a dark and dramatic introduction before assuming the brisk, nearly frenetic motion of the traditional sonata form. The second movement is gentle, with a central theme that gradually evolves as new melodies derived from fragments of the original are introduced. In the final movement Beethoven offers a tempestuous rondo. Article Media. Info Print Cite. Submit Feedback. Thank you for your feedback.
