His wife Padmavati, was an accomplished temple dancer. He was very much influenced by the culture and devotion of Vaishnava Brahmanas. It is believed that Sri Chaitanya Maha Prabhu also visited him. Poet Jayadeva's magnum opus "Gita Govinda' is one of the most popular compositions in Sanskrit language, describing the divine love of Radha and Krishna.

Welcome to the Gita Govinda blog. His Gita Govinda is a work of Sanskrit love poetry and song, centered around its most famous components, 24 Ashtapadis songs with 8 couplets. There is, naturally, also a possible spiritual interpretation to all this, with Radha as the jivatma and Krishna as the paramatma.
Political and geographical fragmentation seems to have been a trivial barrier for this cultural unity to envelop the whole of the subcontinent! The real beauty of the Gita Govinda is in its music. The lyrics are written in such a way that a talented composer can fit a large number of tunes and unleash his creativity, letting the music speak even more than the words. We wanted to give a glimpse of this and began collecting different renditions of a few Ashtapadis; this snowballed into an all-out effort, and this blog was born.

Last Update: 7 th Jul Ashtapadi eight verses : Jagannath Asthaka is the name given to the poetry by Jayadeva in Gita Govindam consisting of 26 Ashtapadis. Ashtapadi hymns are regular compositions of music in India. Each song of Ashtapadi is set in a special raga and tala. It is a rhyme of eternal love and supreme devotion.

The ashtapadis , which describe the beauty of Lord Krishna and the love between Krishna and the gopis , are considered a masterpiece in esoteric spirituality and the theme of 'Divine romance'. The literal meaning of ashtapathi , 'eight-steps', refers to the fact that each hymn is made of eight couplets eight sets of two lines. Although the original tunes of the ashtapadis were lost in history, they remain popular and are widely sung in a variety of tunes, and used in classical dance performances, across India. The lyrical poetry of the Gita Govinda is divided into twelve chapters, each of which is sub-divided into twenty four divisions called Prabandha.
