HYPERBILIRUBINEMIA AAP PDF

Severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia can cause mortality and serious morbidities. When phototherapy fails, neonates with severe hyperbilirubinemia should undergo double volume blood exchange transfusion BET. As this procedure carries a significant risk of mortality and morbidity, adopting guidelines for the treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is critical to avoid hyperbilirubinemia toxicity and also the complication of an unindicated procedure. This study investigated the causes, complications, and trend of BET rate in our unit over a year period. Debra H. Get Citation Citation. Jaundice is a yellowish discoloration of the skin, sclerae, and mucous membranes resulting from deposition of the bile pigment bilirubin. The presence of jaundice on clinical examination indicates hyperbilirubinemia , which is defined as a total serum bilirubin greater than 1. Hyperbilirubinemia is typically characterized by the fraction of bilirubin that is increased, unconjugated indirect , or conjugated direct.

Elevation of either of these fractions results in jaundice. The presence of conjugated hyperbilirubinemia suggests hepatobiliary tract conditions. This item requires a subscription. Subscribe to Pediatric Care Online Purchase your individual subscription.
