Medio Communication: A Conceptualization. The classification of communication activity into interpersonal and mass communication is inadequate. A third category, " medio " communication, is also needed. Examples of this third type include point-to-point telecommunication such as the telephone or mobile radio , surveillance telecommunication, and closed-circuit television.
The soil organic carbon SOC was determined in 40 sites at two depths and cm for different uses of soil during one year February February The temporal distribution maps showed that SOC did not present significant variations in the short-term. PubMed Central. The daily variations in cellular and apoplastic ascorbic acid and dehydroascorbic acid levels in a Mediterranean durum wheat cultivar Triticum durum Desf.
Camacho were analyzed in order to relate them to ambient ozone exposure and to subsequent stomatally absorbed ozone fluxes. The aim of this study is to prove the effectiveness and accuracy of a computer model SODA to calculate the mesophyll resistance rm to ozone uptake, the percentage of ozone detoxification by apoplastic ascorbic acid, and the ozone flux to the plasmalemma Fm in a Mediterranean durum wheat cultivar. These calculated factors were related to apoplastic ascorbic acid levels and to ambient ozone concentrations.
These relationships were obtained with a view to explaining the detoxification of ozone by apoplastic ascorbic acid. Mesophyll resistance was minimum at this time, and ozone flux to the plasmalemma was reduced because of the reaction of ozone with apoplastic ascorbic acid. Quantification of mesophyll resistance and apoplastic ascorbic acid as an antioxidant for tropospheric ozone in durum wheat Triticum durum Desf.
Estudio multifrecuencia del medio interestelar cercano a HD Medio -lateral postural instability in subjects with tinnitus. Many patients show modulation of tinnitus by gaze, jaw or neck movements, reflecting abnormal sensorimotor integration, and interaction between various inputs.
Postural control is based on multi-sensory integration visual, vestibular, somatosensory, and oculomotor and indeed there is now evidence that posture can also be influenced by sound. Perhaps tinnitus influences posture similarly to external sound. This study examines the quality of postural performance in quiet stance in patients with modulated tinnitus. Twenty-three patients with highly modulated tinnitus were selected in the ENT service.
Twelve reported exclusively or predominately left tinnitus, eight right, and three bilateral. Eighteen control subjects were also tested. For both conditions, tinnitus subjects showed abnormally high lateral body sway SDx. For patients with left tinnitus only, medio -lateral sway increased significantly when looking away from the center.
Similarly to external sound stimulation, tinnitus could influence lateral sway by activating attention shift, and perhaps vestibular responses. Poor integration of sensorimotor signals is another possibility. Such abnormalities would be accentuated in left tinnitus because of the importance of the right cerebral cortex in processing both auditory-tinnitus eye position and attention. Local magnitude scale for Valle Medio del Magdalena region, Colombia. A local Magnitude ML scale for Valle Medio del Magdalena VMM region was defined by using high quality earthquakes located at VMM area and inversion of amplitude values of horizontal components of 17 stations seismic broad band stations, simulated in a Wood-Anderson seismograph. Higher values of ML were obtained for VMM region compared with those obtained with the current formula used for ML determination, and with California formula.
Moreover, with this new ML scale the seismicity caused by tectonic or fracking activity at VMM region can be monitored more accurately. Notch activates Wnt-4 signalling to control medio -lateral patterning of the pronephros. Previous studies have highlighted a role for the Notch signalling pathway during pronephrogenesis in the amphibian Xenopus laevis, and in nephron development in the mammalian metanephros, yet a mechanism for this function remains elusive.
Here, we further the understanding of how Notch signalling patterns the early X. Our results indicate that early phase pronephric Notch signalling patterns the medio -lateral axis of the dorso-anterior pronephros anlagen, permitting the glomus and tubules to develop in isolation. We show that this novel function acts through the Notch effector gene hrt1 by upregulating expression of wnt4.
Wnt-4 then patterns the proximal pronephric anlagen to establish the specific compartments that span the medio -lateral axis. We also identified pronephric expression of lunatic fringe and radical fringe that is temporally and spatially appropriate for a role in regulating Notch signalling in the dorso-anterior region of the pronephros anlagen.
On the basis of these results, along with data from previous publications, we propose a mechanism by which the Notch signalling pathway regulates a Wnt-4 function that patterns the proximal pronephric anlagen. River bed sediments commonly fine downstream due to a combination of particle abrasion, selective transport of finer grains, and fining of the local sediment supply from hillslopes and tributaries.
Particle abrasion rates can be directly measured in the laboratory using tumbling barrels and annular flumes, however, scaling experimental particle abrasion rates to the field has proven difficult due to the confounding effects of selective transport and local supply variations.
Here we attempt to correlate laboratory and field rates of particle abrasion in a field setting where these confounding effects can be controlled. Miller in the early 's. Several kilometers downstream of its headwaters, the river crosses the Picuris-Pecos fault.
Upstream of the fault the river receives quartzite, sandstone and shale clasts from the Ortega Formation, while downstream sediments are supplied by the Embudo Granite.
Because the upstream lithologies are not resupplied downstream of the fault, any observed fining of these clasts should be due only to abrasion and selective transport. We hypothesize that we can account for the effects of selective transport by comparing relative fining rates for the different upstream lithologies from both the field and a laboratory tumbler. By correlating laboratory abrasion rates with rock strength, we can predict the relative fining rates due solely to abrasion expected in the field; differences between the predicted and observed fining rates could then be attributed to selective transport.
We used point counts to measure bed surface sediment grain size distributions at 15 locations along a 25 kilometer reach of the Rio Medio , beginning just downstream of the fault and ending upstream of a developed area with disturbed channel conditions.
We recorded intermediate particle diameter as well. The structure of this report consists of this summary part plus two separate journal papers, each having their own UCRL number, which document in more detail the major results in two of three major categories of this study.
The third category is Energy Exploitation Applications and does not have a separate journal article associated with it but is described briefly. The purpose of this project was to develop a capability within the Geophysics and Global Security Division to process and analyze InSAR data for the purposes of constructing more accurate ground deformation source models relevant to Hazards, Energy, and NAI applications.
Once this was accomplished, an inversion tool was to be created that could be applied to many different types sources of surface deformation so that accurate source parameters could be determined for a variety of subsurface processes of interest to customers of the GGS Division.
This new capability was desired to help attract new project funding for the division. Role of medio -dorsal frontal and posterior parietal neurons during auditory detection performance in rats.
To further characterize the role of frontal and parietal cortices in rat cognition, we recorded action potentials simultaneously from multiple sites in the medio -dorsal frontal cortex and posterior parietal cortex of rats while they performed a two-choice auditory detection task.
We quantified neural correlates of task performance, including response movements, perception of a target tone, and the differentiation between stimuli with distinct features different pitches or durations. Estimating the contribution of movement-related activity to these responses suggested that more than half of these units were likely signaling correct perception of the auditory target, rather than merely movement direction.
In addition, we found a smaller and mostly not overlapping population of units that differentiated stimuli based on task-irrelevant details.
The detection-related spiking responses we observed suggest that correlates of perception in the rat are sparsely represented among neurons in the rat's frontal-parietal network, without being concentrated preferentially in frontal or parietal areas.
Background Correction of neuromuscular impairments after anterior cruciate ligament injury is vital to successful return to sport. Frontal plane knee control during landing is a common measure of lower-extremity neuromuscular control and asymmetries in neuromuscular control of the knee can predispose injured athletes to additional injury and associated morbidities. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of anterior cruciate ligament injury on knee biomechanics during landing.
Methods Two-dimensional frontal plane video of single leg drop, cross over drop, and drop vertical jump dynamic movement trials was analyzed for twenty injured and reconstructed athletes.
The position of the knee joint center was tracked in ImageJ software for milliseconds after landing to calculate medio -lateral knee motion velocities and determine normal fluency, the number of times per second knee velocity changed direction.
The inverse of this calculation, analytical fluency, was used to associate larger numerical values with fluent movement. Importantly, analytical fluency for single leg drop differed compared to cross over drop trials for involved P Using inertial measurement units to identify medio -lateral ground reaction forces due to walking and swaying.
Horizontal ground reaction forces GRFs due to human walking and swaying have been investigated respectively through direct measurements using a treadmill and a set of force plates.
These GRFs have also been measured or estimated indirectly using acceleration data provided by inertial measurement units IMUs.
One motivation for this research has been the lack of published data on these two forms of loading that are generated by movements of the human body in the medio -lateral plane perpendicular to the direction of walking or the direction faced during swaying.
The other motivation, following from successful developments in applying IMUs to in-situ vertical GRF measurements, has been to identify best practice for estimating medio -lateral GRFs outside the constraints of a laboratory. Using a smaller and more recent set of measurements including motion capture, it has been shown that IMUs can be used to reconstruct these GRFs using a linear combination of body accelerations at each of the lower back and sternum positions.
There are a number of potential applications for this capability yet to be explored, in particular relating to footbridge performance. Such forces provide a capability to excite horizontal vibration modes of large civil structures with frequencies below 2 Hz that are problematic for mechanical excitation.
As with walking, the ability to use IMUs to estimate medio -lateral swaying GRFs outside laboratory constraints has been demonstrated. As for walking a pair of IMUs is needed, but the best linear combination varies strongly between individuals, according to swaying style.
In-situ application of indirect measurement has. Neuromuscular response of hip-spanning and low back muscles to medio -lateral foot center of pressure manipulation during gait. Footwear-generated medio -lateral foot center of pressure manipulation has been shown to have potential positive effects on gait parameters of hip osteoarthritis patients, ultimately reducing maximum joint reaction forces.
The objective of this study was to investigate effects of medio -lateral foot center of pressure manipulation on muscle activity of hip-spanning and back muscles during gait in bilateral hip osteoarthritis patients. Foot center of pressure was shifted along the medio -lateral foot axis using a foot-worn biomechanical device allowing controlled center of pressure manipulation. Sixteen female bilateral hip osteoarthritis patients underwent electromyography analysis while walking in the device set to three parasagittal configurations: neutral control , medial, and lateral.
Magnitude and temporal parameters were calculated. The amplitude and temporal parameter varied significantly between foot center of pressure positions for 5 out of 8 muscles each for either the more or less symptomatic leg in at least one subphase of the gait cycle.
